The South American country, Argentina, which has hydrogen export potential and under its national strategy for the Development of the Hydrogen Economy launched in September 2023, aims for domestic production of five million tons annually by 2050, allocating 80% of this production to export.
The export of hydrogen as a protagonist
To achieve these objectives, it will be necessary to install 30 GW of electrolysis capacity and 55 GW of renewable electricity generation, which represents a significant increase compared to current capacity. Marcos Cardaci, Vice President for Latin America at Nordex, emphasized at the Future Energy Summit (FES) Argentina the significant potential of Argentina in the emerging green hydrogen (H2V) market.
But despite the notable potential, he noted that gigawatt megaprojects will not materialize anytime soon. Nordex, a German company with more than three decades of experience in renewable energies, highlighted the need to increase Argentine exports by taking advantage of hydrogen as a primarily exportable resource.
In the financial field, Cardaci highlighted the importance of long-term financing as a crucial element to accelerate the development of renewable energies. Despite the existence of bottlenecks, such as transmission lines, he emphasized the need for clear infrastructure planning and a solid regulatory framework for the coming years. Nordex, present in Argentina since 2016 with operations in eight wind farms and approximately 700 MW installed, plans to continue supporting the growth of the energy sector in the region.
Optimism despite challenges
The company continues to encourage the development of local suppliers for wind turbine components and other related services, which is essential to improve efficiency and quality of service in the sector. Cardaci expressed optimism about the future of the private energy sector in Argentina, highlighting the capacity for growth even in challenging contexts, such as the Renewable Energy Term Market (MATER) without state incentives.
In conclusion, Nordex, through the vision of Marcos Cardaci, considers that Argentina not only has a crucial role in the global energy transition towards green hydrogen, but also has the capacity to lead in the export of this resource, contributing significantly to economic development and technological of the country.
