Helix Robotics Solutions, the robotics division of Helix Energy Solutions Group, has been selected by SSEN Transmission to provide unexploded ordnance (UXO) target investigation services under the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) subsea cable project.
UXO research for the largest project of its kind in the UK
This project will be the largest of its kind in the UK and is part of an initiative to create a green electricity highway connecting Scotland and England.
The contract, which will begin in the second quarter of 2025 and is expected to last 125 days , aims to reduce the risks associated with the presence of unexploded ordnance in the submarine cable installation area. To do so, Helix Robotics will use its Glomar Wave DP2 subsea support vessel, together with a remotely operated vehicle and specialized explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) equipment.
The EGL2 project, which is a collaboration between SSEN Transmission and National Grid, is key to the UK’s ambitious strategy to achieve its net zero emissions targets . The construction of this 2GW high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable, which will run from Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in North Yorkshire, will contribute to the transmission of clean energy across the country, improving the capacity of the national electricity grid.
Helix Robotics Solutions is known for its expertise in identifying and removing UXO on offshore projects , strengthening its position in the renewable energy and offshore site preparation sector. This contract reinforces its commitment to risk mitigation and safety on key energy infrastructure projects.
