Fundación Antártica 21, GIZ and the Chilean Antarctic Institute have come together in a joint effort to preserve the environment in Antarctica and comply with the agreements of the Madrid Protocol signed 30 years ago. In line with this objective, they have presented the green hydrogen GIZ pilot .

Green hydrogen project to decarbonise Antarctica

The purpose of this project is to convert the region into a carbon-free zone through the clean production of hydrogen on the continent itself. The idea is based on avoiding the transport and storage of this fuel in remote places, which would entail greater risks and contamination.

The GIZ pilot seeks to establish green hydrogen production scales directly in Antarctica, allowing its local consumption and significantly reducing environmental impact. Likewise, it is expected that in approximately 10 years, this green hydrogen plant will supply energy to the new Escudero base, thus eliminating dependence on fossil fuels such as diesel or oil.

This project represents a crucial step to reduce pollution on the white continent and contribute to its preservation as one of the most delicate and valuable ecosystems on the planet. The initiative shows the commitment of various institutions in the search for sustainable solutions to protect Antarctica and its unique environment.
