Green Cat Hydrogen powers green hydrogen project in Chapelcross

The new hydrogen plant in Chapelcross aims to decarbonize industries and strengthen the local economy with clean energy.
GCH desarrollará planta de hidrógeno en Chapelcross

Green Cat Hydrogen (GCH) has announced the launch of a public consultation for its new green hydrogen project in the Chapelcross Energy Transition Zone, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The initiative seeks to develop a hydrogen plant with the capacity to generate more than 4,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year, thereby contributing to the decarbonization of local industries and the transformation of the region’s economy.

A key plant for the energy transition

The GCH project is aligned with South of Scotland Enterprise’s plans to develop Chapelcross into a sustainable energy hub. If planning permission is approved, the plant will generate approximately 150 jobs during its construction phase and 50 highly skilled jobs once operational. Its primary objective is to supply green hydrogen to various industries seeking to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to hydrogen production , the project includes the development of storage and distribution infrastructure, essential elements to ensure the viability of clean energy supply in the region.

Environmental benefits of the hydrogen plant

The implementation of this plant will allow for an estimated reduction of up to 26,000 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption generated by 20,000 hectares of broadleaf forest.

This impact reinforces GCH’s commitment to emissions reduction targets and the development of sustainable solutions for energy-intensive sectors.

Public consultation and community participation

As part of the development process, Green Cat Hydrogen will hold two public consultation events in Creca , where citizens can learn more about the project, interact with the team behind it, and share their opinions. The first session will take place on April 1, 2025, while the second will be announced on the GCH website.

We want to ensure this project benefits the region and helps position Chapelcross as a benchmark in green hydrogen production.

Gavin Catto, CEO of Green Cat Hydrogen, highlighted.

The Chapelcross masterplan includes initiatives to establish it as an innovative energy hub, combining hydrogen production, storage, advanced manufacturing, and business development. Green Cat Hydrogen will continue to work with its strategic partners to realize this vision and actively contribute to Scotland’s energy transition.
