Offshore wind energy projects in Spain are set to receive a significant boost with the first offshore wind auction, placing Gran Canaria in the spotlight of this energy initiative. With more than 3,000 MW in dispute, the island becomes a key point for the advancement of renewable energies. renewable energy in the country.
On the other hand, the Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, recently announced that the regulation for the development of offshore wind will soon be published, marking a milestone in the evolution of this technology in Spain.
About the first offshore wind auction
The interest of private developers in establishing projects in the waters of Gran Canaria is growing, with renowned participants such as Iberdrola the consortium between BlueFloat y Sener, Cobraamong others, raising the level of competition.
Among the proposals submitted, there are projects of various capacities, from Abei Energy’s 300 MW “Varuna” offshore wind farm to more modest installations such as the experimental 10 MW “Mar de Canarias” offshore wind farm, promoted by Esdras.
Recently, the Spanish government has made progress in the use of floating offshore wind energy with the approval of the Maritime Space Management Plans (POEM), which delimit the areas suitable for the development of offshore wind farms.
It is important to note that at the national level, five zones have been designated for the development of offshore wind projects, totaling 5,000 km2, although four of these zones have captured the most attention from developers. A capacity of 14,331 MW of offshore wind energy is expected to be developed in these areas, contributing significantly to Spain’s energy independence and the reduction of carbon emissions.
With the goal of reaching up to 3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, Spain is aligned with national and European objectives for the promotion of renewable energies, opting for wind turbine technology in deep waters where fixed foundations are not viable.
The potential of offshore wind energy in the energy transition
Spain’s commitment to offshore wind not only reflects the country’s commitment to the energy transition, but also underscores the potential of this energy source to transform the global energy landscape.
The ability to generate clean and sustainable energy on a large scale, taking advantage of optimal offshore wind conditions, positions offshore wind as a key player in the effort to achieve carbon neutrality. This innovative approach not only benefits the environment, but also promotes economic development and job creation, reinforcing Spain’s position as a leader in renewable energy.
