A new announcement closes the door to climate change for Europe. Germany announced that, due to the lack of Russian gas, they will choose to continue producing energy from coal, thus continuing CO emissions2 into the atmosphere and moving away from the goal set by the government, with which it was intended to end coal as a source of production in the country.
The price of gas has skyrocketed in recent days due to reduced deliveries by Gazprom, Russia’s largest gas company, which has decided to raise the prices of the natural resource.
The German environmentalists have accepted the decision as difficult to assimilate “but indispensable”, so asserts Robert Habeck, a member of the environmentalist party of the national coalition.
With winter in sight
During the year 2021, 15% of Germany’s energy came from gas. Currently, they have a reserve of 56% more than previous years. It is expected to be able to face the winter and have backup, due to the possibility of running out of gas due to a cut in Russia.
Meanwhile, Germany, as well as Switzerland and Belgium, maintain their goal of reducing polluting emissions by 2045. However, this does not only depend on their will, but also on the political and economic decisions of other world powers.
