A demonstration of geothermal technology opens up new possibilities
Fervo Energy Company has made a breakthrough in the potential of geothermal technology as a reliable source of carbon-free energy . The Houston-based company has successfully completed a commercial pilot demonstration in northern Nevada, generating 3.5 megawatts of electricity during a 30-day trial.
The project is scheduled to connect to the electric grid later this year and will power Google’s data centers and infrastructure throughout Nevada. This achievement marks a significant milestone on the path to cleaner, more sustainable energy, demonstrating that geothermal has a critical role to play in the transition to a greener future.
This milestone is part of the corporate agreement between the startup and Google, from Alphabet Inc., with the aim of developing improved geothermal systems. Geothermal power plants are essential for a completely carbon-free electricity grid, since they do not emit polluting gases and can operate without interruption.
Fervo’s Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), such as the one demonstrated on this occasion, expand the possibilities of obtaining geothermal energy, opening up new areas for its exploitation.
The renewable energy industry has pursued this goal for a long time, running tests since the 1970s. However, it is the first time that a company has demonstrated the large-scale commercial viability of this technology, marking an important advance in the field of clean and sustainable energy.
“The important thing about what we’ve done today is to show that this technology will work more than a decade sooner than previously thought,” said Tim Latimer, the company’s CEO and co-founder. At the same time he added: “It’s not a mid-century resource, but today.”
