El sistema Tri-gen

The companies FuelCell Energy and Toyota Motor North America have inaugurated an innovative system called ‘Tri-gen’ in the port of Long Beach , California. In this way, we can satisfy high demands with renewable energy.

The innovative Tri-gen system

This facility uses biogas to generate renewable electricity , hydrogen and treated water . Additionally, it is designed to support Toyota Logistics Services’ vehicle processing and distribution center in Long Beach, which receives approximately 200,000 new Toyota and Lexus vehicles annually.

Tom Stricker, Vice President of Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs at Toyota, explained that the objective of this collaboration with FuelCell Energy is to find sustainable solutions for vehicle processing facilities, reducing carbon dioxide emissions from their commercial activities . In addition, the installation demonstrates that it is possible to eliminate these emissions and efficiently use natural resources, using scalable hydrogen-based technology.

According to Jason Few, CEO of FuelCell Energy , Tri-gen’s technology demonstrates that hydrogen-based energy can benefit businesses, provide zero-emission transportation for light and heavy vehicles, and support improved air quality in local communities.

The energy capabilities of Tri-gen technology

The plant has a renewable electricity production capacity of 2.3 megawatts, destined for TLS Long Beach for its port operations. Also, Tri-gen has the capacity to produce up to 1,200 kg/day of hydrogen , meeting the fuel needs of Toyota’s Mirai light electric vehicle, and supplying hydrogen to a service station specialized in heavy vehicles, supporting logistics operations and TLS carriage rates at the port.
