From its base at Oak Ridge National Laboratory ( ORNL ), the Frontier supercomputer, powered by HPE Cray EX technology , has achieved a new record of 1.35 exaflops, demonstrating its ability to solve the most complex problems in modern science.

ORNL optimizes levels of Frontier supercomputer

Frontier’s system , powered by 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs , has increased its performance by adding 400 new nodes, bringing its total configuration to over 9,800 nodes. These advancements, combined with improvements to its math libraries, enable Frontier to process 64-bit scientific-precision calculations with superior efficiency.

Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility director Ashley Barker said the team behind Frontier has optimized every aspect of the system, ensuring researchers can perform critical simulations from atomic structure to astrophysical phenomena.

In addition to the HPL record, Frontier achieved 11.4 exaflops in mixed-precision testing, a technique that optimizes processing speed for artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. This breakthrough marks a significant shift in the way scientists and developers can approach research, exploring new possibilities in a fraction of the time required.

One of ORNL’s prominent members, Al Geist, emphasizes: “We are opening the doors to research that was previously unimaginable. With Frontier, the limit is beyond what is known. ”. Frontier’s capabilities set new standards, inspiring a next generation of exascale systems , such as Aurora and El Capitan , that promise to continue pushing the frontiers of knowledge.
