Robotics company Fourier has announced a breakthrough in the perception technology of its GR-1 humanoid robot. In addition, it has integrated an advanced camera-only vision solution, including a bird’s eye view(BEV), transformer models and an occupancy network. The GR-1 model is the first humanoid robot to adopt this innovative visual perception technology.

Progress and development on GR-1 Humanoid Robot

Perception of the environment is important forthe stimulation and steering of humanoid robots. This allows each laboratory prototype to use its functional tools in the real world. And also, analyze sensor data and make informed decisions about your environment.

In this new pure vision configuration, Fourier has installed six RGB cameras around the GR-1, providing a full 360-degree view. This arrangement allows the robot to comprehensively sense its environment from all angles, including front, side and rear views, generating BEV images for accurate identification and tracking.

Now, based on these BEV images, the GR-1 uses transformer models to convert each complex environment into three-dimensional spatial features, facilitating the understanding of its spatial environment and assessing occupancy possibilities. The occupancy network then translates this data into a three-dimensional grid, which helps the GR-1 robot navigate through passable and impassable areas.

The environmental perception of the GR-1

During outdoor walk tests, the GR-1 demonstrated high efficiency and accuracy in detecting vehicles and pedestrians on sidewalks. The results underline the GR-1’s capability for real-time object real-time object tracking and environmental and environmental mapping while in motion.

Fourier’s camera-only approach reduces system hardware costs while improving the environmental perception of the GR-1. This results in safer and more efficient operations, with human-like accuracy. The GR-1 excels in high definition spatial positioning, extended range visibility and accurate object identification.
