FCC Medio Ambiente and the Irizar Group announce the presentation of the H2TRUCK , the first electric chassis-platform powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, manufactured entirely in Spain. This vehicle is designed to optimize waste collection and other municipal services, and was presented at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, at the Tomorrow Mobility event.

The H2TRUCK truck debuts in Spain

The truck integrates the best of electric technology with hydrogen innovation, offering an emission-free solution for heavy urban services. The H2TRUCK prototype has proven its effectiveness on real waste collection routes in several Spanish cities. With a capacity of 29 tons and a design adapted to cities, urban developments and provinces, the truck operates completely in electric mode, from departure to return to the vehicle fleet.

This development promotes sustainable mobility, solving one of the biggest challenges of electric vehicles: autonomy and recharging times . The business manager of the Irizar Group , Josu Letona, explained that ” the hydrogen fuel cell allows optimal productivity to be maintained, even in cities with intensive shifts .” In addition, it reduces the size of the battery, decreasing the total weight of the vehicle and improving energy efficiency.

Íñigo Sanz, CEO of FCC Servicios Medio Ambiente , stressed the fundamental role of innovation in the company’s sustainability strategy. “ This project is an example of how FCC Medio Ambiente, with more than a century of experience, continues to lead in clean technology for urban services ,” he said. The H2TRUCK has also been a finalist in the “Global Smart City Awards” , a recognition of its positive impact on the environment.

The service truck is versatile and designed to adapt to multiple applications, from waste collection to street cleaning. Its modular construction allows the hydrogen fuel cell system to be integrated into a wide range of urban vehicles, offering a scalable solution for cities around the world. Both companies continue to collaborate with academic and technological entities to refine and expand this pioneering project.
