The National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), Exxon Mobil Angola and Angolan Block 15 partners announced this week a new discovery in the Bavuca Sur-1 exploration well.

The well encountered 30 m (98 ft) of high quality hydrocarbon sandstone. It is located approximately 365 kilometers northwest of the Luanda coast and was drilled in 1,100 m (3,608 ft) of water by the Valaris DS-9 platform.

The US transnational ExxonMobil is implementing new technologies and a multi-year drilling program, with the forecast of extracting around 40,000 barrels of crude per day, which will help compensate for natural declines in production.

Previously, in block 15 other important discoveries took place, among them, those corresponding to the Hungo, Kissanje, Marimba and Dikanza wells in 1998; Rattle and Xikomba in 1999; Mondo, Saxi and Batuque in 2000; Mbulumbumba, Vicango and Mavacola in 2001; Reco-Reco in 2002; and Clochas, Kakocha, Tchihumba and Bavuca in 2003, the report said.

Through the press release, the president of the ANPG Board of Directors, Paulino Jerónimo, valued the significance of the new event in terms of taking advantage of the national potential and promoting the productivity and profitability of the branch.

Block 15 is exploited by Esso Exploration Angola, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, with a 36% stake, the British oil company BP (24%), the Italian ENI (18%), the Portuguese Equinor (12%) and the Angolan Sonangol P&P (10%).
