Green light for gas extraction!
An important economic find has been made in Morocco, as permission has been granted to exploit a new natural gas field in the Douar Oulad Belkheir region, in the west of the country. This is not an ordinary discovery, as the amount of natural gas that can be extracted is estimated to be exceptional . According to the first reports from Gulf Sands, the extension of this deposit is 1.8 km 2 and could allow a daily production of natural gas that would triple that of all of Spain.
This translates into an extraction capacity of more than 280,000 m3 of gas per day. By comparison, Spain currently produces around 92,000 m 3 of natural gas per day, according to the specialized economics outlet Libre Mercado.
It is important to note that the agreement signed by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco has a duration of four years for the extraction of this valuable resource. During the measurements, a constant flow of about 175,000 m 3 was recorded over a period of four hours .
This recent discovery comes at a crucial time, as the global economy has been impacted by the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and subsequent sanctions on Russia. This has resulted in an increase in the cost of natural gas due to the restriction on imports from Russia. In addition, the Moroccan government plans to continue exploring other deposits of natural resources in its vast territory of 272,835 km 2 .
