President José Raúl Mulino has given the green light to one of the most eagerly awaited projects in Panama’s transportation history. The excavation of the tunnel in the Panama Canal, which is part of Metro Line 3, has begun with the commissioning of the “Panama” tunnel boring machine.

This ambitious project will benefit more than 500,000 residents of the western area of the country, considerably improving mobility between the regions and connecting the area of Panama West with the capital. During the inauguration ceremony, Mulino was accompanied by his wife, Maricel Cohen, as well as by several ministers and representatives of the consortium in charge of the project. The director of the Panama Metro, César Pinzón, emphasized the importance of this infrastructure for public transportation and also for the improvement of the quality of life of the families who will see their travel time reduced.
With 63% overall progress on the works, the project is on track to achieve a significant transformation in the connectivity between Panama Oeste and the capital. In fact, 90% of the lifting of the viaduct beams has already been completed, demonstrating the accelerated pace of the work.
Panama tunnel boring machine advances towards Albrook
The “Panama” tunnel boring machine will be in charge of the excavation under the Canal and will open the way for a future railway section to the province of Veraguas. According to plans, the boring will cross a 4.5 kilometer route from the Farfán area to Albrook, transforming mobility between the two sides of the Panama Canal . Panama Canal.
Progress on stations such as Nuevo Arraiján and Ciudad del Futuro is already underway, with 84% progress on infrastructure for train maintenance. As the project progresses, the tunnel is expected to reach its first key point, Balboa, in the next 14 months.
