The government of Chile has announced the opening of the application period for the allocation of public lands for energy storage projects . An important opportunity for future investors who desire the potential of the Chilean region.
The opening of energy storage projects
This initiative is part of the “Promotion Plan for the Development of Storage Systems” , which seeks to promote the installation of projects that will be operational from 2026. Land is expected to be allocated for projects with a total capacity of 13 GWh, particularly in the Norte Grande regions.
This proposal occupies a priority place on the agenda of the second cycle of the electricity sector, and is one of the key strategies for the progress of the energy transition promoted by the government. The Ministries of Energy and National Assets launched the initiative in November 2023, providing important fiscal land for future storage projects.
The Minister of Energy, Diego Pardow, explained that ” storage is an effective solution to manage renewable energy surpluses and variability in generation .” According to Pardow, the program will allow companies to directly request the allocation of land in areas defined by the National Electric Coordinator.
State concessions favor future investors
For her part, the Minister of National Assets, Marcela Sandoval, reported that 32 onerous use concessions have been granted for non-conventional renewable energy projects , covering 14,756 hectares of available fiscal land.
Sandoval also highlighted that these projects will generate approximate annual income of 470,379 UF and will contribute more than 6,500 MW to the national electrical system. He also expressed optimism about replicating this success in applications for energy storage projects.
