New Zealand’s renewable energy sector is about to take a significant leap forward with the construction of the Tauhei Solar Park, the largest solar park in the country . The Spanish company Elecnor will be in charge of the design, supply and construction of this mega project, which will have a capacity of 150 MW and will generate electricity for more than 35,000 homes.
A boost to the energy transition
The project, located on a 182-hectare site near Te Aroha on the North Island, will have a total capacity of 202 MWp once it reaches full capacity in 2026. It is estimated to produce around 280 GWh annually, directly contributing to the decarbonisation of New Zealand’s electricity system.
In addition to its impact on clean energy generation, the initiative will foster job creation in the region. During the construction phase, which will last two years, approximately 350 jobs will be created , in addition to permanent employment opportunities for the operation and maintenance of the park.
Financing and commitment to the solar park
The project is financially backed by a banking consortium including ANZ, ASB, BNZ and MUFG Bank. In addition, the electric company Meridian Energy has signed an agreement to purchase 100% of the energy production of the park during the first ten years of operation, ensuring financial stability and long-term viability.
Beyond its energy and economic impact, the park also includes environmental conservation measures. More than 120,000 native plant species will be planted to protect local biodiversity . In addition, the park’s structure will allow agricultural activity to be maintained, replacing dairy farming with sheep farming, which will be able to benefit from the shade of the solar panels .
A model of sustainable development
This solar park will be connected to Transpower’s 110 kV grid through the Waihou substation, allowing the energy generated to be efficiently integrated into the national electrical system. Its combination of clean energy, environmental conservation and maintenance of agricultural activity positions it as a benchmark for sustainable development in the region.
With the launch of the Tauhei Solar Park, New Zealand is strengthening its commitment to renewable energy and is moving closer to its goal of reducing carbon emissions in the coming years. Elecnor, with its extensive track record in energy infrastructure, is consolidating its presence in the New Zealand market with a project that combines innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency.
