During the 23rd session of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), it was announced that the state company LaGeo will establish an International Center of Excellence in geothermal matters in El Salvador. This center will be used to promote continuous learning about geothermal resources.

El Salvador is one of the countries with the largest amount of geothermal energy on the continent and has a high potential to use this natural advantage for the benefit of sustainable economic development. Under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, power generation has become a vital part of the country’s economic strategy.

The permanent representative of El Salvador to IRENA, Vanessa Interiano, reiterated the government’s commitment to the development of the sustainable energy sector. “The Government of President Nayib Bukele reaffirms its total commitment to continue making all the necessary efforts and actions that contribute to making the adoption of the sustainable use of renewable energies a country priority,” said Interiano.

“Many of IRENA’s projects are being developed through CEL (Comisión Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa, LaGeo’s parent company), the executing arm of the Government in energy matters. Once executed, they will provide key elements for their maximum renewable energy potential, contributing to the fight against climate change and improving people’s quality of life,” added the representative.

In the context of the Council session, the authorities recalled that El Salvador will host the high-level conference of the Global Alliance for Geothermal Energy, scheduled to be held on September 30 of this year.
