Los 04 reactores nucleares

The French state-owned EDF group has launched an expanded proposal to design and build up to 04 new nuclear reactors , with an energy potential of 1,200 megawatts each in the Czech Republic.

The EDF proposal and the 4 nuclear reactors

This proposal responds to a request from the Czech electricity company CEZ, and could include the installation of one to four EPR1200 reactors at the Dukovany and Temelín plants. In addition, EDF’s proposal contemplates the management of the complete nuclear fuel cycle, from its design to its supply.

The Czech Republic’s interest in nuclear expansion is due to the need to modernize its energy infrastructure . Currently, with six reactors in operation and still depending on power plants for 40% of its energy production, the country sees nuclear power as a viable route for the decarbonization of its economy, complementary to the development of renewable energies.

However, EDF has not revealed the estimated cost of this expansion , although reports from business daily Les Echos suggest that the price per reactor could initially be around €10 billion. This cost could be reduced if the construction of the four proposed reactors is carried out, benefiting from economies of scale.

This is not the first time that EDF has undertaken projects of this magnitude. It is currently building reactors in Flamanville, France. Another project is also in development in Hinkley Point, UK. Both projects face delays and high cost overruns.
