A strong drought in the Amazon basin has forced Ecuador to reduce oil production by 4,300 barrels per day, which translates into a decrease in the country’s supply. The lack of water in the Napo River has prevented the transfer of fuel to fields such as Eden-Yuturi and Apaika-Nenke, located in Blocks 12 and 31. This situation has led to the stoppage of several oil wells.
Oil production reduction measures
The state-owned oil company Petroecuador reported that the drought has made it difficult to transport supplies by barge, affecting production. No improvement date has been estimated, as the situation depends on weather conditions.
Ecuador produces approximately 486,000 barrels per day and most of this production comes from the state-owned company, with an additional portion supplied by private companies under service contracts.
The reduction in production affects Ecuador’s ability to meet its export commitments, and increases pressure on the country’s energy sector, which relies heavily on oil exports. oil exports..
