Jacobs Company has been chosen by BaroMar, an energy storage company , to lead the initial design phase of an underwater energy storage project located off the coast of Cyprus. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions by demonstrating the viability and scalability of a pioneering technology that is simple, efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

About the subsea energy storage system

The system is based on the combination of mature energy technologies and marine systems with the hydrostatic pressure of seawater. This combination reduces installation costs and achieves the lowest possible levelized cost of storage (LCOS).

Aiming for full-cycle efficiency of up to 70%, the project is presented as a reliable solution to the challenges of intermittent renewable sources, such as wind and solar and solar energy and their high infrastructure costs.

On the other hand, Jacobs vice president Fiachra Ó Cléirigh stressed the need for comprehensive geophysical, geotechnical and bathymetric studies, along with investigations, feasibility studies and permits for the installation of tanks at significant depths. Also, the operation of the system relies on the storage of compressed air in large rigid tanks anchored to the seabed; tanks that are designed to withstand the forces of the marine environment, as well as the pressure of compressed air and hydrostatic water during the installation and operation phases.

For his part, BaroMar CEO Yonadav Buber highlighted the importance of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, stressing the need for cost-effective and environmentally friendly storage solutions. Buber noted that BaroMar’s technology allows excess grid electricity to be safely stored underwater for future use, with low capital requirements and minimal maintenance, making it a sustainable and scalable option to support global net-zero emissions ambitions.
