Swiss startup Destinus is making a breakthrough with the development of its Destinus S aircraft, the first commercial aircraft to reach hypersonic speeds and run entirely on hydrogen .

This innovative aircraft is designed to carry a maximum of 25 passengers and travel distances of up to 10,000 km at an impressive speed of Mach 5 , making it more than twice as fast as the now defunct Concorde.

Flight to Match 5

With its ability to reach five times the speed of sound , the Destinus S is capable of dramatically reducing flight times. In fact, a typical trip between Paris and New York can be completed in just 90 minutes , pushing the limits of what was thought possible in air travel .

This aircraft uses a combination of turbojet and ramjet engines, which activate efficiently as speed and altitude increase, allowing the aircraft to take full advantage of its power and energy efficiency.

When will the Destinus S be available?

A key aspect of the Destinus S is its commitment to the environment. Using only hydrogen as an energy source, this aircraft offers unprecedented speeds and minimizes the environmental impact of flights. Hydrogen, an environmentally friendly fuel, is the key to its operation, since when used in the aircraft’s engines, it generates only water vapor as a byproduct, with no carbon emissions .

This approach to sustainable aviation is an important step towards the future of aviation, where the use of renewable energy, such as solar and wind, for hydrogen production will be essential to further reduce the ecological footprint of the aviation sector.

Although the Destinus S is still in development, deliveries of this high-speed aircraft are expected to begin between 2032 and 2035 . The company is working to ensure that this model meets all safety and efficiency requirements before it enters the market. In addition, Destinus is already planning a larger model, the Destinus L , which could carry up to 400 passengers and reach speeds of up to Mach 6 , further driving innovation in the aerospace sector.
