Denmark has committed to increasing the production of hydrogen from renewable sources, its government has announced.

The low-carbon fuel could replace oil in planes, trucks and cargo ships, as well as replace coal in steel and cement production, helping curb pollution from transport and heavy industry. This hydrogen is produced through electrolysis, using electricity from renewable sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Denmark aims to generate up to 6 gigawatts of capacity through electrolysis, which will require further construction of clean power plants.

The effort will be supported by grants of 1.25 billion Danish kroner ($184.83 million). “We have had an economy that has been primarily based on oil, but in the future it will be based on hydrogen,” climate and energy minister Dan Jorgensen told Reuters. “This will help us become independent from fossil fuels.”

Jorgensen said he expects swift aid approval from the European Union (EU), which could help curb the use of imported Russian fossil fuels. Europe is heavily dependent on Russia for coal, oil and natural gas and seeks to limit imports from this country.

As part of its climate targets, the EU has proposed 6 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity in all member states by 2024 and 40 gigawatts by 2030.
