Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group has delivered one of the world’s largest container ships to MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.
MSC Tessa is one of the few ships to surpass the 24,000 TEU* mark and the first in the MSC fleet. With a capacity of 24,116 TEU, it surpasses Evergreen’s 24,004 TEU Class A vessels, which includes the first 24,000+ TEU vessel, Ever Alot, but is just below the recently delivered OOCL Spain with its 24,118 TEU capacity. . OOCL España was built at the Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering shipyard in Nantong, China, and is the first ship in a series of six under construction.
According to Chinese state-affiliated media, the MSC Tessa was delivered to the Changxing shipbuilding base in Shanghai. The delivery was confirmed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which said the delivery cements CSSC’s leading role in the field of ultra-large containership construction.
MSC Tessa measures 399.99 meters in length with a beam of 61.5 meters. It is one of four ultra-large container ships ordered at Hudong Zhonghua for MSC, the world’s largest container shipping operator.
MSC has orders for even larger ships, MSC Irina and MSC Loreto, with a reported capacity of 24,346 TEU. They are the first of a series of six vessels under construction at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China.
Hudong Zhonghua is part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
* TEU is an acronym that comes from the English “Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit” and corresponds to a unit of measurement used in foreign trade to calculate the load capacity of containers. In other words, a TEU is the cargo capacity of a standard 20-foot (20′ x 8′ x 8′) container.
