The deck of a offshore platform known as Ekofisk 2/4 G has been successfully dismantled and moved for recycling. Earlier this summer, the Pioneering Spirit removed the structure from the seabed and transported it to the Aker Solutions Stord shipyard, where it will be disassembled and almost entirely recycled.

Environmental and technical impact of platform deck removal

It is important to note that the Ekofisk 2/4 G structure, although part of the Ekofisk field, was under the ownership of Aker BP. The platform, which originally facilitated the extraction of oil and gas from the Valhall field, was installed in 1981 and began operating a year later. Initially connected to the 2/4 T module, the platform ceased operations in 1998, and the dismantling of its components has been carried out gradually since then.

The procedure to remove the jacket involved cutting the structure into two segments due to height restrictions. This challenge was met thanks to the capabilities of the Pioneering Spirit, which, using its 5,000-ton crane, lifted both parts onto the aft deck. After securing the sections, the vessel proceeded to Stord to unload and recycle the structure.

The operation, which was carried out smoothly, highlights the efficiency and safety with which it was executed, thanks in part to the optimal weather conditions that prevailed during the mission, characterized by the absence of wind and significant waves. This factor was crucial in ensuring an incident-free operation, to the credit also of Allseas’ expert management. Allseas.
