Germany marks a breakthrough in sustainable transport with the delivery of its first fully electric ferry . Damen Shipyards has completed construction of the electric catamaran E-Kat, designed to operate in the East Frisian Wadden Sea.
Design and technology of the E-Kat electric catamaran
The 32-metre long ferry can carry 150 passengers and is designed to cover the route between Norddeich and Norderney in just 30 minutes . Its two 600 kW electric motors, powered by solar -charged batteries, ensure emission-free operation. In addition, its aluminium structure significantly reduces weight, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 12 knots.
To adapt to the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea, the E-Kat incorporates a double-hull design that minimises its draft to just 1.2 metres. It also features panoramic windows that provide passengers with exceptional views of this UNESCO-protected ecosystem.
Commitment to sustainability
AG Reederei Norden-Frisia , the ferry operator, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. The energy that powers the E-Kat’s batteries comes from solar panels installed on land, making its operation carbon neutral. This project is part of a broader effort to achieve zero emissions in its maritime operations.
The E-Kat is a special ferry. We are proud to have delivered it and are confident that it will play a key role in the transition to sustainable shipping.
Said Joschka Böddeling, Sales Director at Damen Shipyards, highlighting the importance of the project
The ferry will begin operations in the summer season, setting a new standard for maritime transport in Europe and making it clear that sustainability is no longer an option, but a necessity in the naval industry.
