The design of the autonomous robot manages to increase the structural resistance of this material, making it much more cost-effective and efficient. Itone’s technology allows the concrete to be distributed evenly and intelligently, which strengthens its structure as resistance.
How does the Conit Runner work?
This device is known as the Conit Runner, and it was developed in collaboration between Korean robotics company Itone and Posco E&C . Its main function is to move autonomously over wet concrete , creating precise grooves that improve adhesion between layers. These grooves reduce the need for reinforcing rods, saving up to 30% on material and speeding up construction times by 85%.
The robot uses advanced sensors such as LiDAR and ultrasound, along with cameras and an inertial measurement unit ( IMU ). This allows it to travel at speeds of up to 16 km/h, avoiding obstacles while analysing the hardness of the concrete to ensure it is suitable for the process. In this way, it strikes a balance between efficiency and strength.
The Conit Runner aims to reduce costs, and offer a lighter and faster alternative to current methods. By avoiding extensive use of rebar and reducing hours of manual labour, this technology could look to improve how large-scale infrastructure is designed.
