A group of companies in the wind energy sector has succeeded in completing the first ever ‘ in situ ‘ exchange of major components on an offshore floating wind turbine . This planning breakthrough took place at the Kincardine wind farm in Scotland, eliminating the need to tow the turbines to a nearby port.
The successful exchange of components
This process was made possible by the collaboration of companies such as LiftOff , Vestas and Cobra Wind International , who integrated their technologies and expertise to perform the exchange of critical components on a Vestas V164-9.5MW turbine . By using a specialized tower crane, the operation was carried out entirely offshore, from a support vessel, which was a great improvement compared to other maintenance schedules.
The implementation of this technique makes it possible to avoid costly towing operations of floating wind turbines to port, which until now were the only option for carrying out maintenance on key components. This new approach reduces turbine downtime, and minimises carbon emissions and costs associated with offshore repairs.
Dragados project director José Polimón Olabarrieta recounted the importance of this breakthrough, stating that this technical solution redefines the future of offshore wind energy. ” We eliminate the need to disconnect and tow the turbine to land for repairs, which will have a positive impact on the entire sector ,” explained Polimón.
Cutting-edge technology for a sustainable future
The technology employed by the company included the installation of a GenHook crane directly on the floating turbine, allowing for precise handling of the generator despite the high sea conditions. This lifting system adjusts to the constant movements of the turbine, monitoring the load at all times to ensure safe operation.
