ICON is preparing the launch of CarbonX, a new specialized concrete for 3D printing of large-scale housing, which promises to reduce the carbon footprint in construction.
ICON’s environmental commitment and its new concrete
The new technology, called CarbonX, comes as a response to the need for new construction methods that mitigate environmental impact. This concrete has been adapted and optimized for use in large-scale technical 3D concrete printers. In addition, the main value of the project is characterized by its low carbon footprint.
Collaboration with the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub has been fundamental in validating the project’s merits. Through rigorous analysis, it has been shown that 3D printed houses using this material have a lower environmental impact compared to traditional constructions.

One of the most relevant findings of this research is the energy savings that can be achieved, especially in regions with hot and dry climates, demonstrating up to 9% per year, compared to wood construction companies.
And last but not least, ICON Build is about to introduce Vitruvius, an artificial intelligence platform that promises to raise awareness of the alternative use of home building tools, with 3D printed The platform will enable users to take a more active role in the process of future structures.
