A recycling company in San Francisco has developed an artificial intelligence-driven robot to optimize the recycling process. This technology is now used in plants of this type throughout the country. Rebecca Hu and her co-founder, Areeb Malik, have created an innovative method to reduce waste by using artificially intelligent robotic sensors that sort and organize garbage.
Glacier uses AI robot for recycling
Robotics company Glacier has made it easier for recycling infrastructures to recover more items that would otherwise have ended up in landfills or oceans. “The idea for Glacier came about four or five years ago, directly influenced by headlines about the climate crisis,” Hu explained.
Hu has always been conscious of waste.“My parents are immigrants from China and I grew up with the mantra of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle,'” he commented. This mindset led her to develop advanced AI camera sensors, which are now used not only in the Bay Area, but also in other states such as New Jersey and Arizona.
Glacier and waste reduction
According to studies, only 21% of recyclable material is captured. Kate O’Neill, a professor of environmental science at the University of California, Berkeley, says conservation efforts in the United States remain urgent.“We’re still struggling to build new recycling facilities and get people to participate,” she said.
For this reason, Glacier’s mission is crucial.“We want to design something that is immediately useful for all the important players in the circular economy,” Hu emphasized. Its solution has attracted the attention of Amazon which is now one of its customers and uses the invention in its packaging.
Hu serves as an inspiration to his team, who share his passion for the environment. “Every breakthrough we achieve motivates me even more to be the change I want to see in the world,” Hu stated. In today’s environmental context, their work is vital for global benefit.
