In Colombia, specifically in the Córdoba region, a pilot project has been launched that combines floating and above-ground solar panels, with a capacity of 1.52 MWp.

This project called Aquasol, has been built by the public company URRÁ and has been officially inaugurated in the municipality of Tierralta, located in the south of the department of Córdoba. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélez Torres, was present at the inauguration.

Aquasol has been installed in the reservoir of the URRÁ Hydroelectric Power Plant and has a total of 3,248 photovoltaic modules .

Aquasol: the largest floating solar system in Latin America

It is estimated that the plant will generate around 2,400 MWh of electricity per year , making it the largest floating solar system in Latin America today, according to URRÁ.

The project has a total capacity of 1.52 MWp, including both ground-mounted and floating solar panels. Likewise, the inverter’s capacity to convert current to alternating current is 1.35 MWac.

Vélez Torres commented on the importance of this project, highlighting that it joins other initiatives that are already leading the way towards a fair energy transition by companies in Colombia. He stressed that this hydroelectric plant that is committed to clean and renewable energy to optimize part of its operation sends a powerful message about the progress that is being made in Colombia in terms of renewable energy generation.

Aquasol not only provides power for the auxiliary services of the hydroelectric power plant during sunny hours, but is also a pilot project that will facilitate scientific research to determine the advantages of implementing conventional fixed-structure photovoltaic systems on solid ground.

To this end, URRÁ has established agreements with the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Montería and the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla. In addition, they are in the process of establishing research and development agreements with other universities, both national and foreign.
