Endesa has received approval from the Spanish government to decommission a coal-fired power plant in northwestern Spain, with the intention of replacing it with a 1 GW wind farm.
The As Pontes coal plant will be closed
The company issued a statement indicating that the Ministry of Ecological Transition (Miteco) has approved its request to close the As Pontes coal plant , the largest in Spain, with a capacity of 1,468 MW.
An Endesa spokesperson reported that the company will complete the use of the remaining coal at the plant by the end of September , before the Galician regional authorities declare their use ban for the plant. Subsequently, it will proceed to launch a contest for the dismantling of the plant .
It should be noted that Endesa had communicated its intentions to replace the coal-fired power plant and its power generation with renewable sources, including a 1 GW capacity wind project.
Spain aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and earlier this year set more ambitious goals in its transition to a green economy. The country plans to reduce carbon emissions by 30% compared to 1990 levels by the end of the decade and aims to get 48% of its energy requirements and 81% of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar power by 2030 .
