The Ciudad de la Energía Foundation (CIUDEN) continues to move towards the decarbonisation of Spanish industry. With the aim of promoting the development of synthetic fuels , CIUDEN is finalising a platform that is unique in the country. This system, which combines advanced biomass and renewable energy technologies, becomes a key point for the transition towards a greener and more sustainable economy.

CIUDEN transforms waste into sustainable synthetic fuels

The project, which will be implemented in collaboration with various companies in the energy sector, seeks to be a benchmark for the production of synthetic fuels from clean energy sources, such as renewable electricity and green hydrogen. CIUDEN is thus positioned as an innovation centre for the validation of technologies that can transform organic waste into high-value sustainable fuels, such as methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This platform will serve as a testbed for companies wishing to explore new forms of renewable hydrogen production and other synthetic fuels. CIUDEN will facilitate access to a unique infrastructure for biomass gasification, a key process for generating energy from non-fossil resources.

Tenders and projects in progress

CIUDEN has recently launched its second tender for the project, which covers the synthesis gas cleaning system. This contract, which has a budget of one million euros , is aimed at guaranteeing the quality of the gas generated during the oxygenation process of forest and agricultural biomass.

The tender is part of a broader programme that aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of biofuels and other renewable fuels derived from local resources, such as agricultural and forestry waste. This initiative is aligned with the objectives of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the industry, a crucial step to meet the commitments of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).

This effort by CIUDEN is part of Component 10 – Just Transition Strategy of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), promoting a zero-carbon future in the industrial sector. In addition, the Foundation seeks to create a positive impact in the regions affected by the energy transition, such as the municipality of Cubillos del Sil (León), by generating employment opportunities and sustainable economic development.
