Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners ( CIP ) has received the Final Investment Decision ( FID ) and is starting the construction and planning of an autonomous energy storage project, called ” Arena BESS “, which is based on batteries that will have a capacity of approximately 220 MW / 1,100 MWh.
The CIP energy storage project
The Arena BESS project will be one of the first large-scale energy storage facilities in the country. It will be located in the Antofagasta region, an important area for solar power generation due to its excellent solar resource. In addition, the system will store excess solar energy generated during the day and release it during nighttime hours, allowing for a stable supply of renewable energy.
The project aims to support the integration of large-scale solar projects into the Chilean grid, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions in the region. BESS ( battery storage system ) technology will shift renewable energy generation to peak consumption times, making energy infrastructure more efficient.
This is CIP’s first energy storage project in Chile, but it is part of the company’s broader strategy to invest in renewable energy across Latin America. Through its Growth Markets Fund II , CIP has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and the creation of long-term energy infrastructure in the region.
CIP will continue to explore opportunities to expand its presence in the clean energy sector in Latin America. The Arena BESS project is clear evidence of the need for advanced storage technologies to meet Chile’s renewable targets and reduce its carbon footprint, supporting the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
