Chinese scientists are advancing by leaps and bounds in accelerating quantum computing and presenting a prototype with 113 photons detected.

It is the “Jiuzhang 2.0” quantum computer, which is a septillion times faster than the world’s fastest existing supercomputer and 10 billion times faster than its previous version, “Jiuzhang”.

“Compared with Jiuzhang, we have greatly improved the performance and collection efficiency of the quantum light source, increased the number of detected photons, and demonstrated the phase programmability of the GBS quantum computer,” explained Lu Chaoyang, member of the research team and professor at the University of Science and Technology of China.

This machine is capable of solving in a single millisecond an operation that the fastest supercomputer would solve in 30 billion years. Jiuzhang 2.0 can be used in quantum chemistry, graph theory, and machine learning.

Quantum computing is an area in constant development and Chinese research teams have made remarkable progress, currently this technology is used in sectors such as biomedicine, computer security and the financial sector.
