China has begun construction of the first stage of a new nuclear power plant in the eastern province of Zhejiang, whichwill include six third-generationHualong One reactors designed and developed in China.

This project, reported by the economic news portal Yicai Global last Tuesday, represents the fourth nuclear facility in the province.

About the new nuclear plant

The Jinqimen plant, with a projected investment of approximately $6.2 billion, is expected to reach an installed capacity of 7,200 MW once all six reactors are operational, contributing about 55 million MW/hour per year to the power grid.

In this initial phase, two Hualong One reactors, each with a capacity of approximately 1,215 MW, will be built, a project that received Chinese State Council approval late last year. This approval also includes the construction of the third and fourth units at the Taipingling plant, located in the southeastern province of Canton.

As part of its strategy to secure energy and reduce carbon emissions, China is increasing its investment in nuclear power. In the past two years, the country has approved the construction of 20 new nuclear reactors, Yicai reported.

Beijing’s plan is to double the share of nuclear power in the country’s energy mix from the 5% recorded in 2021 to 10% by 2035.

Importantly, the expansion of nuclear power in China not only underscores the country’s commitment to diversifying its energy matrix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, but also highlights its leadership in the development of advanced nuclear technologies.

As China moves toward its goals of energy security and environmental sustainability, its investment in nuclear power serves as a model for other nations seeking to balance economic growth with ecological responsibility.
