The Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has inaugurated the world’s first plant in Henan to produce regenerated cellulose fiber using ionic solvents. This technology makes it possible to manufacture textiles with minimal emissions and no waste, eliminating the use of conventional toxic solvents.

The facility, with a capacity of 1,000 tons per year, replaces hazardous compounds such as carbon disulfide with stable and recoverable ionic liquids, achieving a recovery rate of more than 99%.

Cleaner and more efficient textile manufacturing

In addition, the structure of the ionic liquids offers outstanding technical advantages: high polarity, low volatility and excellent solubility for various compounds. This makes cellulose processing safer and more environmentally friendly.

The result is a fiber that meets international quality standards for strength, elongation and uniformity, making it an alternative to fossil fibers and traditional viscose.

With this plant, China’s textile sector is making progress in its goal of reducing its carbon footprint. carbon footprint. It is estimated that this technology will avoid approximately 5,000 tons ofCO2 per year, reinforcing national climate targets.

The project is the result of more than a decade of research and development, with progressive validations from laboratory to full-scale production.
