Chilean academics developed the research “Resilient planning of low-carbon power systems”, currently used in the review of electricity supply security standards in Australia.

The study presents innovative mathematical models that serve to create advanced mathematical tools for risk assessment and resilience planning in the electrical network, allowing optimal decisions to be made to minimize risks.

The objective of the research is “to have a more resilient supply. That it does not fail with the current ease in case of natural events. And if it fails, it can be recovered quickly and effectively”, indicates Rodrigo Moreno, leader of the investigation. This would help create planning practices and form a low-carbon and resilient transmission network, for an approximate amount of 180 million Chilean pesos.

That a leading country in renewable energies and in adaptive dynamics in regulation like Australia, supports the proposal for changes in its regulations, demonstrates the great contribution and potential of the work of academics in improving the electricity supply in Chile and the world.

The research included the participation of experts from the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the University of Manchester, the University of Costa Rica, and partners from Malaysia and China, broadening the spectrum of the application of these models to other problems and countries of the world. It was recognized in 2018 by the Newton Prize, due to its excellence in innovation and research for the economic development and social welfare of the member countries of the Newton Fund, United Kingdom.
