Chevron has started the second phase of development in the Israeli Tamar gas field, located offshore Israel. Despite ongoing conflicts with Hamas, the U.S. company is focused on increasing production from the field to 1.6 billion m3 per day. This expansion project represents an investment of US$24 million.

In addition, Jeff Ewing, managing director of Chevron’s Eastern Mediterranean operations, highlighted the company’s continued commitment to the State of Israel to advance the development of its energy resources, benefiting both the domestic and regional natural gas markets.

Tamar field production

The Tamar field, along with another massive field, put Israel on the global gas map when they were discovered. Last year, the field produced 10.25 billion m3of gas, representing an 18% increase over 2021.

It should be noted that Chevron had to suspend operations in the field last October due to Hamas attacks against Israel. Chevron’s local unit, Chevron Mediterranean Limited, was instructed by the Israeli Ministry of Energy to shut down production at the Tamar Production Platform.

Chevron Mediterranean Limited is the operator of Tamar and holds a 25% interest in the field, along with other partners such as Isramco, Tamar Petroleum, Mubadala Energy, among others. At Tamar, six production wells generate natural gas volumes ranging from 7.1 to 8.5 million m3 per day. Most of the natural gas processing is carried out at the Tamar platform, located 24 km west of Ashkelon, supplying 70% of the energy consumption needs of the country. energy consumption Israel’s energy consumption needs for electricity generation.

Production at the field resumed about a month later, when the government in Tel Aviv determined that the risk of disruption by Hamas had been eliminated.
