Benninghoven has unveiled an innovative system that promises to shift the paradigm of asphalt production toward greater sustainability. This pioneering development introduces the first green hydrogen burner system, setting a new standard for environmentally responsible practices in road construction.

Asphalt production faces significant challenges in the process of achieving sustainable road construction. However, the introduction of low-temperature asphalt, the possibility of using up to 100% recycled asphalt, and now hydrogen as a clean energy source, have led to the introduction of hydrogen as a clean energy sourceThe introduction of hydrogen as a clean energy source opens up new avenues to drastically reduce carbon emissions.

First burner with hydrogen system

The world’s first burner fueled by 100% green hydrogen not only demonstrates the feasibility of this approach, but also sets a precedent for the production of asphalt with zero net emissions.

Innovation in burner operation by Benninghoven has optimized the thermal process required for asphalt production by heating and dehydrating the base material prior to mixing with bitumen. The new generation of burners, which includes an advanced control system and an efficient drying system, allows the use of up to four different fuels simultaneously, maximizing resource efficiency and profitability for plant operators.

The Benninghoven system ensures “green production” of asphalt. It coordinates hardware and software to control feeding, pressure regulation and drying, allowing rapid changes in fuels or combinations of fuels without interrupting the operation, which minimizes temperature fluctuations and significantly reduces emissionsemissions, especially nitrogen oxides (NOX).

In addition to its versatility in the use of fuels, this technology has reduced electricity consumption by 20% while maintaining the same production capacity. It has also improved heat transfer efficiency. An additional benefit, especially relevant in urban areas, is the 5 dB reduction in noise emissions.

Green hydrogen: vital for a sustainable future

Green hydrogen is emerging as the most sustainable solution for the future, free of greenhouse gas emissions and with an optimal energy density for thermal processes. While the current infrastructure may present challenges for widespread adoption, Benninghoven is leading the way with innovative solutions and customer support, ensuring that both new and existing plants can benefit from this revolutionary technology.

This approach not only represents a breakthrough for the road construction industry, but also marks an important step towards reducing the carbon footprint in key industrial sectors.
