The British company Modus Subsea Services has signed with Equinor what is considered the first contract for resident drones at sea to carry out underwater intervention missions with drones in the Johan Sverdrup field in Norway.
Modus was awarded the innovative contract after a comprehensive and competitive bidding process in which the company highlighted its technological and operational capabilities.
The contract covers underwater drone intervention operations at the Johan Sverdrup field, and one of Modus’ autonomous underwater vehicles (HAUVs) will be installed there.
Offshore operations will include autonomous ground surveys and light interventions with over-the-horizon control from Modus’ Command and Control Center at its Darlington headquarters. The contract will run from 2023 to mid-2024.
The Modus company had been working on the subsea residence with its fleet of HAUVs for some time and accelerated its development in the area after a successful trial range with Equinor in November last year.
According to the British company, the residence, in which the vehicle remains docked to an underwater docking station for charging and data transfer, will provide zero-carbon RMI and prospecting solutions that will improve sustainability, efficiency, safety and decision making in the sector.
