The long-awaited fifth generation (5G) mobile telephony network arrived in Brazil this week with the activation of antennas in the capital, Brasilia.

“5G is already a reality! Look at the speed! The technology arrived today in Brasilia,” wrote in a message on Twitter the Minister of Communications of Jair Bolsonaro’s government, Fábio Faria.

Faria detailed that “5G will enable the broadband connection offer” and reiterated that Brazil “will soon be 100% connected”.

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) assured that Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Joao Pessoa will receive this technology in a second stage, but did not specify the date. The deadline set for all Brazilian capital cities to receive 5G is September 29, 2022.

The tender, considered the largest in the history of telecommunications in this country, to operate telephony and internet with 5G technology took place in November 2021 and raised R$46.7 billion (about US$8.4 billion).

Among the big winners are the giants Claro, Telefónica Brasil and Tim, which were awarded concessions to operate 5G technology in the 3.5 GHz band, the most widely used band worldwide.

Sectors such as agriculture, industry, telemedicine or distance education are among the major beneficiaries of this technology, presented as “the internet of things”.

By way of example, the Brazilian government expects the agribusiness sector to increase productivity with 5G by connecting the entire production chain process: monitoring the health of an animal through chips, weather conditions with drones or the water situation with sensors; harvesting a crop with machines that will use artificial intelligence or the distribution of products with maps and a GPS system.

5G is expected to have speeds 100 times faster than 4G now and its connection is much more stable.
