BP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mauritanian government this week, under which it will implement an innovative program that explores the potential for large-scale green hydrogen production in the country.

Building on BP’s existing strong relationship with Mauritania, the deal could be an important step towards developing significant green hydrogen production in the nation.

The MoU was signed at a side meeting at COP27, by the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, Minister of Oil, Mines and Energy of the Government of Mauritania, Managing Director of BP Bernard Looney, Executive Vice President of BP Gas and Low Carbon Power, Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, the executive vice president of generation and operations of BP, Gordon Birrell, and the senior vice president of BP for Mauritania and Senegal, Emil Ismayilov.

As part of this agreement, BP will carry out a series of studies to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of producing green hydrogen in Mauritania. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water, powered by renewable energies.

BP will initially conduct a data collection campaign with studies assessing the suitability of wind and solar resources at selected locations for large-scale renewable power generation and green hydrogen production.

Earlier this year, BP also announced the signing of an E&P contract for the BirAllah gas resource in Mauritania.
