Black & Veatch has been selected as owner’s engineer and technical advisor on two battery energy storage (BESS) projects in Scotland and the North West of England. These initiatives will contribute to grid stability and support the UK’s renewable energy transition objectives.
About energy storage projects
The projects will allow up to 200 MWh of energy to be stored , ensuring greater efficiency and reliability in the electricity supply. This type of infrastructure is key to the integration of renewable sources such as wind and solar, which depend on variable weather conditions.
As the owner’s engineer and technical advisor, Black & Veatch will oversee the design and construction of the storage plants, ensuring compliance with quality and efficiency standards . Its experience in energy projects globally, with more than 21 GWh of storage capacity, reinforces its role as a leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions.
The UK government has set ambitious targets in its Clean Energy Strategy, aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The expansion of BESS systems is a crucial step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels and strengthening the electricity system with more sustainable and efficient technologies.
