Bayer and Iberdrola decarbonize the Asturian plant with a steam electrification system

An innovative steam electrification system will transform Bayer's Asturian plant.
Bayer e Iberdrola impulsan la descarbonización industrial

Bayer has taken a crucial step toward sustainability by ratifying an agreement with Iberdrola Spain to decarbonize its plant in La Felguera, Asturias. This project, which stands out as one of the most important for the industrial decarbonization of the Asturian mining region, will transform the way energy is generated and consumed at the plant.

Technological innovation in industrial decarbonization

The agreement includes the installation of a thermal storage system designed by Inerco, a Spanish company specializing in energy technology. This system will harness renewable electricity generated by a photovoltaic plant installed by Iberdrola, located on the grounds of the former thermal power plant. This renewable heat will be converted into steam, necessary for Bayer’s industrial processes, replacing the use of fossil fuels at the plant.

Bayer and Iberdrola seek to position the La Felguera plant as a model of industrial sustainability , aligning with the sector’s decarbonization goals. Through this collaboration, the Bayer plant It will become the world’s first completely decarbonized aspirin production facility .

The project, which has an investment of 17 million euros , will create more than 30 jobs in the region during the construction and implementation of the system, strengthening the local economy and reaffirming the companies’ commitment to the sustainable development of Asturias.

A step towards a more sustainable industrial future

Steam electrification will not only allow Bayer to reduce the impact of fossil fuel volatility but will also represent a breakthrough in industrial competitiveness. The thermal storage system will optimize the use of renewable energy, providing a flexible and efficient heat source that will reduce operating costs and support the deployment of renewable energy throughout Spain.

This project, promoted by the Ministry of Industry through the PERTE (Regional Development Plan for Decarbonization), underscores the potential of the energy transition to transform Spanish industry. With this agreement, Bayer and Iberdrola not only mark a milestone in decarbonization but will also lay the foundation for future, more sustainable industrial projects.
