Canadian Pacific Kansas City ( CPKC ) and ATCO EnPower announced the completion of two hydrogen production and refueling stations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. These facilities mark progress in CPKC ’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program , which seeks to optimize rail transportation with hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotives.
Hydrogen stations for rail transport
Each facility features a 1 MW electrolyzer, compression systems, storage and dedicated dispensers for locomotive refueling . The Calgary station leverages renewable energy, using some of the electricity generated by CPKC’s 5 MW solar farm. These stations will supply sustainable power to the locomotives, and serve as a model for future hydrogen projects across Canada.
ATCO EnPower designed, supplied and constructed both stations, and has signed an agreement to operate them. ATCO EnPower Executive Vice President of Projects and Operations Mark Brown said: ” These facilities represent progress towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation, reflecting our commitment to innovative energy solutions .”
CPKC Assistant Vice President of Operational Technology Kyle Mulligan emphasized, “ These stations are critical to advancing our hydrogen locomotive testing and our commitment to a lower-carbon transportation future .”
These stations are intended to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in rail transport. CPKC’s goal is to lead the transition towards more efficient and environmentally friendly charging solutions, setting a standard for the rail sector.
With its global headquarters in Calgary, CPKC is the only transnational railroad with extensive connections to Canada, the United States and Mexico, offering advanced logistics solutions and access to markets across North America.
