At an event in Riyadh, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, announced the launch of the Geographical Survey of Renewable Energy Sites Project. This project, which is part of the National Renewable Energy Program.

Extensive coverage and local renewable energy contracts

Contract awards for the project have been made to Saudi companies. These companies will be responsible for the installation of 1,200 solar and wind energy metering stations throughout the country. This project will cover an area of more than 850,000 square kilometers, excluding populated areas, sand dunes and areas restricted by airspace.

The Minister of Energy stressed that the area covered by this study is comparable to that of entire countries such as the United Kingdom and France combined, or Germany and Spain combined. This type of geographic study, on such a large scale, is unprecedented worldwide. The main objective is to identify the best sites for renewable energy development of renewable energy projects based on the abundance of energy resources and the feasibility of their development.

In its first phase, the stations will be deployed throughout the Kingdom to survey designated areas. These stations will then be moved to the most suitable sites to provide accurate data needed for the implementation of renewable energy projects.

The solar stations will measure various parameters such as direct normal irradiance (DNI), global horizontal irradiance (GHI), diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI), as well as factors such as dust deposition, ambient temperature, precipitation, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure.
