With a technical ceremony held at the shipyards in Nantong, China, TotalEnergies Angola and the National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels ( ANPG ) announced the start of the upgrade of the vessel that will become the FPSO Kaminho. This project marks the first deepwater oil drilling project in the Kwanza Basin.
The Kaminho floating FPSO unit and its transformation
The Kaminho FPSO will be responsible for processing production from the Cameia and Golfinho fields. With a projected capacity of 70,000 barrels per day and storage for 1.6 million barrels, it will become a central infrastructure for the offshore exploitation of Block 20/11. This block, operated by TotalEnergies (40%), Petronas (40%) and Sonangol (20%), is located approximately 150 km southwest of Luanda, with depths reaching 2,000 meters.
The vessel will be a fully electric unit, equipped with advanced power generation and gasless combustion systems. This innovation will allow the produced gas to be reinjected directly into the fields, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It will also integrate variable-speed compressors to optimize energy consumption.
With an investment of $6 billion, the project plans to invest more than 40 million man-hours in Angolan shipyards, promoting the participation of local companies. According to statements by ANPG and Sonangol executives, the initiative opens up long-term business opportunities and strengthens the commitment to developing national talent.
TotalEnergies , the largest producer in Angola, emphasizes that Kaminho is its seventh unit of this type in the country. Its development helps ensure the continuity of national production and the achievement of sustainable goals in a year in which Angola celebrates five decades of independence.
