SK Plug Hyverse has completed construction of a liquid hydrogen station to supply commuter buses in Icheon, Gyeonggi-Do. This facility, jointly developed by SK E&S and Plug Power, has a four-ton liquid hydrogen storage tank, a cryogenic pump and two refueling dispensers that can supply up to 120 kg of hydrogen per hour.

Planning to convert more than 2,000 fossil fuel buses to hydrogen by 2026. This station will provide the hydrogen needed for SK Hynix’s fleet of hydrogen commuter buses, which operates at the semiconductor company’s Icheon campus.

The project has the backing of the South Korean government, with construction starting in August 2023 and a successful test earlier this year. Hydrogen will be supplied to the station by the liquid hydrogen production plant. liquid hydrogen production plant of SK E&S, which has an annual capacity of 30,000 tons and was inaugurated just two months ago. which has an annual capacity of 30,000 tons and was inaugurated just two months ago.

According to the SK E&S vice president, liquid hydrogen refueling stations are particularly suitable for large commercial vehicles, which will allow their rapid expansion along with the recent growth of commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses.

Last month, SK Plug Hyverse awarded Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gas Group (CE&IG) a contract to build and maintain around 24 additional liquid hydrogen refueling stations, further strengthening the infrastructure needed for mass use of hydrogen as a clean fuel.
