Amazon has decided to withdraw its Astro for Business security robot, designed for small and medium-sized businesses, just seven months after its launch.
Why did Amazon recall the Astro for Business robot?
According to an email sent to customers and employees, the company explained that the main reason for this decision is to focus on the domestic version of Astro.
Launched in 2021, the domestic version of Astro offers features such as home security, pet detection, message delivery and a cargo container capable of carrying up to 4.4 pounds. An Amazon spokesperson mentioned that they are committed to developing world-class consumer robotic solutions for the home.
To accelerate progress and ongoing research, they decided to stop supporting Astro for Business. They are excited about the new home experiences they are creating for Astro and plan to share more details in the future.

Impact on commercial customers
Astro for Business robots will be discontinued as of September 25. Amazon has recommended that customers recycle these devices through its recycling program, covering shipping costs. Although it was not specified how many commercial customers will be affected, it is clear that demand was not sufficient to justify continued investment in these devices.
Astro for Business, priced at $2,350, came with three subscription plans. The “Astro Secure” subscription cost $60 per month and included features such as route scheduling. There were also two optional subscriptions: one for $20 per month for features such as Ring alarms and motion detectors, and another for $99 per month for assistance and monitoring by human agents.
From now on, companies will no longer pay the “Astro Secure” subscription fee. Amazon has also announced a $300 credit for affected customers, which can be used to fund a replacement solution for their workplace. In addition, customers will be reimbursed for any unused Astro Secure fees paid in advance.
