Amazon has announced the implementation of twelve new energy projects that will increase its renewable capacity in Spain. These comprise four wind farms and eight photovoltaic plants, which when added together would result in a capacity of 596 megawatts (MW).
Increasing renewable capacity
Amazon will reach almost 3 GW in renewable energy capacity in the country. The company currently has a total of 79 projects in Spain, including 9 wind farms, 40 photovoltaic plants and 30 self-consumption installations in its official buildings. Globally, however, the company manages more than 500 renewable energy projects.
Each of these projects will supply Amazon’s operations in Spain, such as its Amazon Web Services (AWS) logistics and data centers as well as its corporate offices and physical stores. This deployment of renewable infrastructure is already supplying energy to these facilities, contributing to the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint.
Amazon’s vice president and general manager for Spain, Italy and Portugal, Mariangela Marseglia, detailed the company’s vision to match global electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy by 2025.
Amazon’s contribution to renewable energy
Amazon’s photovoltaic and wind initiatives in Spain have attracted considerable investment, estimated at 670 million euros. This investment strengthens the country’s energy infrastructure and improves the economic impact, contributing more than 243 million euros to the local Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
From 2014 to 2022, the company’s renewable energy projects in Europe have generated an investment of more than $2.6 billion. In addition, these projects have added more than $780 million to the region’s GDP and created more than 3,900 full-time jobs in 2022 alone.
